Your pet deserves the best in veterinary care. Our staff is dedicated to providing ongoing wellness for your family pet.

Dogs and cats need consistent professional medical attention throughout their lives. Veterinary well checks ensure that your pet receives a complete physical examination, appropriate diagnostics, and preventive treatments necessary to ensure optimal health.

Routine Annual Wellness Checkups

Cat with doctor getting examined

When your pet gets their annual wellness checkup, here’s what you can expect.  Your pet will be checked over in a general way that starts with a physical examination. This is done to help catch any obvious problems such as:  skin and ear conditions,  dental disease,  newly arising lumps or bumps, areas of pain and discomfort, and mobility issues.

During the visit, you’ll discuss your pet’s health at home.  You will have the opportunity to convey anything that may be concerning you, such as changes in behavior or appetite, or anything else that’s changed since the last visit. The doctor will also ask you specific questions to highlight common potential issues, as well as to get a better sense of the animal’s lifestyle at home.

Wellness Checkups for Special Situations

Consistent wellness checkups are also crucial for pets that fall into special categories:  aging pets, puppies and kittens, and patients with ongoing medical conditions.

Senior Pet Care

Senior and geriatric pets often develop a range of age-related issues.  Unperceived pain can be the underlying cause of apparent lethargy and difficulties with mobility.  Changes in eating, eliminating, body weight, and behavior can be due to metabolic diseases that can go unnoticed until they are advanced.  Examination of your older pet every 6 months, combined with discussion with you, will guide us in how to best keep your aging pet healthy.  Our goal is to help you provide your beloved pet a good quality of life for as long as possible.

Puppy and Kitten Care

Your new puppy or kitten should visit us soon after you bring them home.  Some puppies and kittens have unseen parasites or infections.  They can lead to problems for the patient, other pets, and people in the house.  A physical exam, parasite testing, and recommendations about vaccinations, diet, preventive medicine and training will get you and your new pet on the way to health and happiness in your home. We will recheck him or her every 3 weeks to keep vaccinations and parasite control updated as they grow,  until they are 4 months old.

Patients With Ongoing Medical Conditions

There are some patients that have ongoing medical conditions  that are best managed with routine monitoring and evaluation.   Some of those conditions are:  Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, Diabetes, Seizure Disorder, Thyroid Gland Disease, progressive Motility Disorders, and many other Metabolic, Endocrine, Infectious and Immune Mediated diseases.  Our doctors are experienced in treating and helping our clients manage these problems.  Our state of the art Laboratory and Imaging capabilities on premises provide the doctors the ability to quickly assess patients and modify their care plans as needed.

The approach to Veterinary Wellness Checkups at Matanzas River Animal Hospital will be tailored for each pet. We are dedicated to providing the most advanced and compassionate care.
