Dr. Herbert Nicolas
Dr. Nicholas has been practicing veterinary medicine in the St. Augustine area since 1989. He graduated with honors from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. He opened Matanzas River Animal Hospital in 1998. He served on the board of the St. Augustine Humane Society and has been an active member and past president of the St. Johns County Veterinary Medical Society. He is an avid cyclist and hiker in the rural areas of St. Johns County and the mountains of North Georgia and Western North Carolina. He has a sailboat on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville and tends to a hayfield in western St. Johns county.
Dr. Sheila Lopez
Dr. Lopez has been an Associate Veterinarian at Matanzas River Animal Hospital since January 2012. She graduated from the University of Florida's Veterinary School with honors in 2004. She is involved with St. Augustine Regional Veterinary Emergency Center so our clients have quality and affordable after-hours and emergency medical care. Dr. Lopez was born and raised in St. Augustine, Florida. She likes to take advantage of her days off swimming, nature trekking, gardening, and spending time with her family. Her husband, Dan, and their three children. Dr. Lopez shares her love of pets with her family; they have two golden retrievers, Butter and Token, three cats, Meaners, Sassy, and Princess Rainbow, and one horse, Saia.
Brittany Mac Iver, Office Manager
Brittany has been with Matanzas River Animal Hospital since October 2012. She has been a member of a veterinary team since 2006, fulfilling all aspects from receptionist to technician to management. She graduated from University of South Florida with degrees in Biomedical Science, Anthropology and a minor in Public Health in 2009. Brittany also serves in the United States Navy Reserves as an Intelligence Specialist at NAS Jacksonville. Brittany lives in the St. Augustine area with her husband and four-legged daughter Athena. In her spare time, Brittany enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and reclaiming old furniture.
Bert Runk, Client Communications/Technician
Bert has been with Matanzas River Animal Hospital since the clinic opened in 1998. She has been a key member of the team serving as receptionist, technician, and client communications liaison. Bert has been in the veterinary field for nearly 40 years. She graduated from University of Florida with a degree in Animal and Poultry Sciences. Bert lives in the St. Augustine area with her husband, Chris, and children (both two-legged and four-legged). She enjoys taking Lilly, one of her four-legged children, to surrounding nursing homes to interact with patients and to agility classes. In Bert’s share time she enjoys making gem trees, oil painting, drawing, and rehabbing houses.
Justine Lane, Client Care Coordinator
Justine has been a Client Care Coordinator at Matanzas River Animal Hospital since August 2009. She grew up in Saint Augustine and enjoys the area. Justine graduated from Pedro Menendez High School in 2007. Justine lives in the St. Augustine area with her husband, Trevor, and son, Jameson, who they are eager to welcome in August. They also have three four-legged children, Cane, Scar and Tazz. In her spare time Justine enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach and partaking in outside activities.
Jasmine Torres, Technician
Jasmine has been a member of the Matanzas River Animal Hospital team since August 2012. She has been a member of a veterinary team for the last 9 years. She attended the Hillsborough Community College Veterinary Technician Program. Jasmine lives in the St. Augustine area with her sister and children. She also has two four-legged children, Sparky and Professor Muffins. In her spare time Jasmine enjoys spending time with her family and reading.
Dirk McCoy, Technician
Dirk has been a Veterinary Technician for more than 20 years in both New Jersey and Maryland. He has worked with a myriad of animals from small to equine, bovine and exotic. His areas of expertise include surgery, critical care and dentistry. Although he has sung opera professionally, he currently enjoys focusing his talents and energy toward providing excellent veterinary patient care. His outside interests include golf, fishing and creating lifelike portraits of animals. Dirk lives in St. Augustine with his wife Lisa, an opera singer and voice teacher, and their cat Figaro.
